Argentina

Argentina is a land of extremes, its hectic urban centres contrasting with its remote hinterland. This beautiful country has arguably the tastiest beef, the sexiest dance, the best-looking people, the highest peak and the most cosmopolitan city in South America. Add to that its vast plains and deserts, glistening lakes, thundering glaciers and some of the greatest waterfalls on Earth, and you have a destination with immense potential.

Argentina has so much to offer; the vast array of wildlife alone is breathtaking. Galloping with gauchos while staying on working estancias gives a wonderful insight into rural Argentinean life, whilst Buenos Aires offers an amazing cultural tour of city life.

To fish in Argentina is to leave the cold British winter and find yourself in beautiful summer enjoying some of the world's most appealing trout fishing, set amidst surroundings that take your breath away. Argentina’s famed sea-run brown trout waters are located in the southern tip of the country in the region called Tierra del Fuego, or Land of Fire. Tierra del Fuego is home to the best sea-run brown trout fishery in the world and the monster sea trout that have spawned many a legend.

Sea trout are a migratory variety of the common brown trout: as the food supply in the salt water is superior to that available in rivers, they often grow to more than double the standard size. Tierra del Fuego, however, is very close to the stupendously rich marine environment of the Antarctic, where immense shoals of shrimp-like krill reside. Living on this diet sea trout quickly assume the proportions of Atlantic salmon, growing to ten or even 20 times the size of their diminutive freshwater cousins. 1998 saw the record fish being caught on rod and line - 35 pounds 2 ounces - taken from the Río Grande.

The Rio Grande and the Rio Gallegos have enviable reputations, not only for their exceptional fishing but also for their dramatic scenery. The prolific numbers of trout landed here entice anglers to return year after year, with results only improving with time. The Gallegos was originally stocked with brown trout from Loch Lomond and Loch Leven at the turn of the 20th century and now their anadromous descendants return in their droves each season.

If culture, scenery and a calmer pace of fishing are the order of the day, then the wild trout fishing of Argentina’s unexploited countryside is unrivalled. With crystal clear waters, panoramic views and spectacular fishing this country really is one of the fisherman’s wonders of the world. The variety of lodges offered by Woodward Bailey is extensive, ranging from luxury estancias to remote lodges tucked away in isolated mountain regions.

Woodward Bailey are now proud to offer the excitement of fishing for what is considered to be the single most challenging native freshwater game fish of South America - the dorado. Found in the Iberá Marshlands, a pristine wilderness located in the north of the country, these wetlands accommodate some of the largest dorado in existence. Known in local Spanish as the ‘River Tiger’, this fish strikes with fearsome anger and fights with a ferocity virtually unseen elsewhere in a fish this size, making for exhilarating sport.

Here at Woodward Bailey we guide guests through the extensive labyrinth of fishing and lodges available throughout this wonderfully diverse land, selecting only the finest and most productive. Add to this guides and hosts who have a passion for the sport and their country, and are enthralling company on hand to offer first-class advice where needed.
